The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future. The Position: ILRI seeks to recruit a post-doctoral fellow to work within the ILRI-led new CGIAR Research Programme on Livestock and Fish, that aims to consolidate research and development (R&D) efforts for a pro-poor transformation of the smallholder dairy value chains in Tanzania among other value chains. The R&D objectives of the Tanzania project over the next four years are to: 1) develop scalable value chains approaches with improved organization and institutions serving resource-poor male and female smallholder dairy households; 2) generate and communicate evidence on business and organizational options for increasing participation of resource-poor male and female households in dairy value chains; and 3) inform policy on appropriate roles for pro-poor smallholder-based informal sector value chains in dairy sector development.
An initial one-year inception was undertaken in 2012 to: a) assess the current status of the Tanzanian dairy sector and identify appropriate entry points; b) develop a strategy for strengthening the policy environment to better support pro-poor dairy development; and, c) identify sites appropriate for piloting pro-poor dairy development interventions.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead field activities geared towards improving value chain performance, working closely with national research and development partners at local and national level;
  • Responsible for evidence-based assessment of organizational models selected for piloting, including monitoring of gender dimensions, farmer business and organizational strategies and potential constraints to adoption and scaling up;
  • Apply existing and new conceptual value chain analysis frameworks to identify pro-poor opportunities for improving the associated value chains;
  • Contribute to preparing strategic communication products including journal publications and proposal development.
  • Publishing the results of research in high quality peer-reviewed international journals and in other media;
  • Working with and building the capacity of students.
Essential Skills and Qualifications will include:
  • PhD in agricultural economics, agribusiness or related field, (PhD must have been attained within the last 3 years);
  • Experience in livestock (preferably dairy) R&D in East Africa particularly in Tanzania
  • An understanding of innovation systems, input and service supply, and value chain analysis
  • Experience in research design, use of quantitative and qualitative analytic methods
  • Experience with supervising/coordinating collection, storage and analysis of gender-disaggregated data related to agricultural households and associated value chains
  • Excellent written and spoken English (knowledge of Kiswahili will be an added advantage)
  • Good interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural environment and foster teamwork
  • Track record of publishing in peer reviewed publications;
Post location: This position is based in Tanzania at a Project Office that will be located at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), at the ILRI office being established.
Position level: Post-doctoral Scientist (4A).
Duration: 2 years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.
