We are looking for an individual who is organized, highly-motivated and results-oriented to join the Administration Department as the Clerk of Works.
The position is based in Nairobi and reports to the Administration & Procurement Manager
Purpose of the Job:
The position will be expected to supervise and ensure that work is carried out to the organization’s standards, specifications and schedules by monitoring the use of correct materials and workmanship, while creating an interface with all levels of management. The position, in essence, ensures that the organization is given quality work and value for money.
Key Responsibilities:
• Ensuring high standards of quality are maintained for each contract by conducting regular site visits as a way of visual inspection to view work progress based on relevant drawings and written instructions; contract implementation assessment with reference to building, health and safety legislation Acts; and basic instruction of contractors where necessary.
• Acting on behalf of the nominated Contract Administrator by carrying out audits of the Engineering Services Maintenance Contracts through site visits; checking service works against work schedule and contractors’ invoices; and providing feedback on any information or problems at the site.
• Be responsible for proper scoping of works and drive timely delivery of the construction projects.
• Monitoring and supervising contractor performance and ongoing works and consultants on site to ensure quality control (materials and workmanship) and effective use of resources in accordance with drawings and specifications.
• Be responsible for preparing Bill of Quantities (BQs) before project implementation.
• Monitoring compliance with standards, specifications, time, schedules and safety requirements.
• Making sure that the contractors are up-to-date on current knowledge of building services legislation, standards and methods of installation; that they are familiar with all relevant drawings and written instructions, checking them and using them as a reference when inspecting the work; through research and reading so as to ensure the necessary criteria are used; and being conversant with statutory requirements.
• Acting as an adviser/superintendent to the contractor on certain aspects of the work, particularly if something has gone wrong and ensuring soundness and practicality of designed proposals.
• Record keeping through maintaining detailed records of all aspects of the works and monthly statements/reports for the organization.
Qualifications and Competencies:
The ideal candidate must have at least a Diploma in Building Construction, Architecture or Quantity Surveying from a recognized institution, a C+ (plus) or its equivalent in ‘O’ levels and a minimum of ten (10) years’ experience as a Clerk of Works in a large and busy organization. A wide understanding of the building industry, including knowledge of materials, trades, methods and legal requirements is pertinent to the position as well as being up to date with changes in construction methods and statutory legislation while ensuring continued professional development.
The candidate must possess good spoken and written English and Kiswahili, remarkable interpersonal skills, is self-driven, result-oriented, focused and able to work under pressure with minimal supervision. Excellent organizational skills, good supervisory experience, keen observation and decision making are essential to this position as are the ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience. Additionally, the holder must be able to prioritize tasks and possess a high degree of integrity and maturity.
