Developing more resilient home vegetable gardening for women in flood affected communities of Odisha
AVRDC-The World Vegetable Center is a nonprofit, autonomous international agricultural research center with headquarters in Taiwan and regional offices around the globe. The Center conducts research and development to contribute to improved incomes and diets in the developing world. AVRDC in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services is implementing a project in Odisha, India for 17,000 households on “Improving the resilience of vulnerable communities in the Puri district to recurrent floods.” It will include helping women’s self help groups to develop more resilient and productive home vegetable gardens.AVRDC is seeking a highly motivated and qualified person for the position of Project Scientist, to be based in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.
The job:
1. Coordinate research activities with partners to develop a package of practices to optimize the production and resilience of women’s home gardens and to improve seed supply chains;
2. Provide technical assistance in developing and promoting good home vegetable gardening practices and other vegetable related activities of the project;
3. Organize training for local partners and women farmers to optimize the management of home vegetable gardens for improved family nutrition;
4. Assist in developing extension training materials and programs in coordination with project team members, and documenting success stories;
5. Assist in monitoring and evaluation of project activities;
6. Provide regular progress reports, financial reports, technical papers, and presentations for meetings, and annual reports as needed by project stakeholders.
7. To link project activities in Odisha with AVRDC home gardening projects in other states to ensure effective learning and application of findings
The person: Minimum of a Master’s degree in agriculture or horticulture, preferably with advanced studies or training in vegetable crops or community development; At least five years of related work experience; Good analytical skills and the ability to monitor and evaluate experimental trials, to run training courses and to work closely with women’s self help groups and local partners; Strong writing and verbal communication skills are required in English and highly desirable in Oriya; Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver outputs within agreed time frames and to work effectively in the field.
The appointment:A competitive all inclusive consolidated compensation will be paid based on experience and skills. The appointment is for 3 years at Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.
