This placement is developed to support the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training’s project to improve the quality of pre-service training for primary and secondary school teachers in Tanzania. This government project will focus on 31 government Teacher Training Colleges, and VSO team will provide assistance to a cluster of four Teacher Training Colleges, one of which is Marangu TTC.
What does the role involve?
You will be responsible for improving the training for the student teachers of Marangu TTC, as well as assess and support their professional needs. Specifically, your job will consist of:
- Reviewing the current training delivery and identifying the needs of the tutors
- Coaching and training the Tanzania Educators’ Program (TEP) trainers
- Assisting the various departments within the Marangu TTC to support and monitor the tutors as well as to improve the curriculum
- Developing and delivering a training package for student teachers’ clubs to enable them to develop low costs resources and teaching strategies to practice curriculum delivery
- Supporting the Marangu TTC to deliver 3 professional development days per year
- Supporting the Marangu TTC to share learning with other colleges
Skills, qualifications and experience required
You will need a relevant education degree, a teacher training qualification, and five years experience of training, coaching/mentoring. You’ll have to be a motivated and enthusiastic self-starter with ability to adapt with a different working environment/culture. Ability to build social relationship with your colleagues is also essential. You will have to be ready to travel long hours to support different colleges.

You will be based in Moshi, a town located in Northeast Tanzania, at the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is 7 hours bus trip away from the capital city Dar es Salaam where VSO office is located.
