Exciting opportunity for EU nationals to work in the newest country in the world to support the management of Terereka County Health Department in improving the health status of the community.
Background
The European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps (EVHAC) is an initiative developed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) of the European Commission. Volunteers working under the EVHAC project will be placed directly with VSO's partner organisations in Bangladesh or South Sudan, and will be supported by VSO offices in each of those countries.
VSO is the world's leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. VSO's high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. VSO has around 1,500 volunteers working with partners in 36 countries.
What does the role involve?
You will be a counterpart to the heads of various departments in the County Health Department. Specifically, your role will involve the following:
- Improve the management capacity through on-the-job training, to develop good office management system, including planning/scheduling, recording and filing, use of IT.
- Support the implementation of the national policy on primary health care, identify the challenges and develop clear actions
- Develop a range of community participation activities in order to encourage community to take ownership of their local health care
- Assist in the management of donor aid including planning, financial management and accountability reporting
- Promote linkages/sharing with other VSO volunteer placements at the national and state levels
- On occasions, provide clinical advice to the County Hospital, PHCCs and PHCUs and build the clinical skills of the Terekeka Primary Health Care Centre as it transitions to a hospital.
Skills, qualifications and experience required
You’ll need to have a recognised qualification either as a nurse, doctor or clinical officer a qualified social worker with at least three years solid experience in service management or service delivery at the community level (including health promotion and clinical care). Skills in (change) management and training/coaching, as well as experience in leadership role are essentials for this role.
South Sudan is a new state at a post-conflict stage therefore an understanding, patience, and flexibility in working with limited resources and basic facilities is highly required. You’ll also need the ability to take initiative and build good relationship with your colleagues and the community.

Terereka is a small county town, 2 hours away by land from Juba, the capital city, where VSO office is located.
This is a voluntary placement. We'll ask you to commit 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we'll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance.
