Senior Manager, Health Promotion Special OLympics International Washington, DC, United States

The Senior Manager, Health Promotion & MedFest manages all event-based and year-round health promotion programming for Special Olympics. This position is part of the global Healthy Athletes program, which provides health assessments, education, services, and care at Healthy Athletes events to Special Olympics athletes globally. This position is responsible for planning, developing, and disseminating health promotion content. It is also responsible for providing technical assistance to Special Olympics Programs in promoting health and wellness to athletes and athlete leaders, families, caregivers, and coaches, as well within their own organizations. This position has a significant integrative function, co-developing programming with other Special Olympics departments, to ensure that health is woven throughout the Special Olympics experience. The position also serves as an expert to other internal and external stakeholders in the area of health promotion. 


Description:

•    Overall responsibility for the management of Health Promotion and MedFest Screening Program and Operations (domestic and international), including supervising a Health Promotion Manager who is responsible for:
o    Events management 
o    Procurement and coordination of equipment, supplies, etc.
o    Evaluating screening protocols to ensure international sensitivity and applicability
o    Volunteer Clinical Director training
o    Capacity grant management
o    Developing, updating and evaluating protocols
•    Develop and monitor quality of the health promotion elements of the Healthy Communities project including:
o    Health Champions recognition program to encourage organizational changes that enhance the healthiness of the Special Olympics experience.
o    Ongoing community-based health and wellness programming offered by SO Programs and their network of family, caregiver, athlete leader, and coach volunteers, as well as by community partners.
o    Programming targeting the social support network of athletes, including Family Health Forums, ALPS health programming, coach health education.
o    Supporting capacity development for Programs in implementing the activities above directly as well as through community partnerships.
•    Support the development of criteria, outcomes, and targets, and participate in the selection of Healthy Communities
•    Assist with the identification and translation of global partnerships into national and local partnerships that can (1) provide additional health services to athletes in model communities and beyond, including new services, education, and care that address regionally acute health concerns (e.g. Malaria, TB, HIV, waterborne diseases, overweight and obesity) (2) raise the profile of intellectual disability in the community development platform at the national and community levels, and (3) identify new financial resources to support Healthy Athletes at all levels of the organization.
•    Create global health materials and curricula for locally relevant health conditions (ex: obesity, water hygiene, malaria and other infectious diseases) that are appropriate for people with intellectual disabilities; including building partnerships with organizations who have relevant topical and program development expertise. 
•    Serve as an internal consultant to other departments and to SO Programs on initiatives related to health promotion, overweight and obesity, physical activity, nutrition, sun safety, and other relevant areas as needed.  
•    Assist with developing strategies, programming and resources for integrating health into all sports and non-sports activities at Special Olympics.
•    Conduct periodic needs assessments to determine gaps in health education and explore external programming that might address these gaps. 
•    Make presentations to SOI and external audiences and assist in preparation of materials for others to present.
•    Assist in preparation of reports and proposals to funding organizations.
•    Collaborate with the Global and Regional Clinical Advisors to strengthen Health Promotion and MedFest.


Qualifications:

Essential
•    Master’s Degree in health promotion, public health, international development or other health science discipline.
•    5-10 years of demonstrated experience in developing and managing international development programs ideally with a focus on improving health outcomes in developing countries.
•    Advanced knowledge of and professional experience of health promotion including an understanding of the main health systems challenges in a resource poor setting.
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including a demonstrated ability to build and maintain networks, provide advice and communicate effectively with a culturally and professionally diverse range of stakeholders.  
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
•    Must be able to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
•    Experience working with people with intellectual disabilities is an advantage.
•    CHES certified or equivalent
•    Additional language skills.
