The Person and the Job:
If you have obtained a PhD in the social sciences and wish to contribute to improving the management of natural resources in developing countries of Asia and Africa, a Researcher or Senior Researcher position with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) could be just the right assignment for you. We are looking for candidates with skills and interests in livelihoods research and political ecology as applied to topics related to small-scale agricultural water management, agricultural water investments and land degradation. In the first instance, you will work with us to find practical solutions to problems surrounding these topics in East Africa, though over time you will have the opportunity to contribute to our programs throughout Africa and Asia. Candidates must have an interest in carrying out research that grapples with key development challenges and aims to seek solutions for poverty alleviation. The position holder will be based at the East Africa and Nile Basin office of IWMI in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and will report to the appropriate Theme Leader.
You will:
• develop innovative ways of engaging with rural farming communities to plan and implement improved natural resources management (i.e., participatory video, participatory modeling, innovation platforms, etc.);
• conduct institutional analyses.;
• work within multi-disciplinary teams to deliver results, and develop new research ideas and proposals;
• author journal articles to demonstrate scientific rigor, but be dedicated to change on the ground;
• have a keen interest in improving livelihoods and the environment in the countries in which we work; and
• contribute to the research program related to gender and equity.
You must possess:
• a PhD or equivalent experience in anthropology, sociology, geography or a closely related discipline;
• experience in qualitative and quantitative methods and action research;
• two to five years of post-PhD experience and a track record of publications to demonstrate research ability, depending on the level of appointment;
• ability to independently design and conduct field research and engage with multiple partners;
• ability to work in a team with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds;
• strong analytical skills and a learning attitude;
• strong oral and written communication skills;
• significant experience living in the developing world; and
• willingness to live in Ethiopia and to travel.
It would be useful if you have:
• project management experience; and
• successful experience in proposal writing.
This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
