As a senior specialist and member of the International Communications Team, the International Communications Advisor is responsible for supporting country programmes and members of the ActionAid Federation in the planning and delivery of communication initiatives that can have a significant impact on the success of the global AAI Strategy, People’s Action to End Poverty. In particular the role will act as a key relationship interface with both ActionAid’s external and internal stakeholders and with other functions within the organization to enable our communications activities to be effective and efficient.
On a professional level, you will have a degree in journalism, communications, new media or another related discipline coupled with experience of working in an international environment and preferably experience working in communications in other countries. You will have exceptional written and verbal communication skills (fluency in English). We require specialist expertise in media relations, brand and reputation management, website development and digital communications, campaigning and mobilizing citizen engagement, publication development and video and photography. The ideal candidate must have the ability to think and plan strategically, particularly in developing communications strategies. This will be supported with experience of producing, coordinating and implementing multi-media strategies for specific events, projects or issues. This role asks for an individual with a creative, imaginative and enthusiastic approach to projects, team working and problem solving, exceptional interpersonal skills and a high level of influencing and negotiation skills and experience. Your capacity building experience including training, facilitating and mentoring will be a great advantage to you in this role.
On a personal level, this individual must have a strong commitment to develop, promote and practice ActionAid’s vision, mission, values and strategy. Familiarity with development issues, civil society activism and effective campaigning with an understanding of the rights-based approach is preferable. Astute political judgment and knowledge of current affairs is essential. Willingness to travel regularly and at short notice together with a commitment to work out of normal hours when required is necessary.
