Job Title: Manager of Communications & Marketing

Purpose of the Job
To lead and manage the Communications & Marketing team, driving communications and marketing activities in line with our strategic plan, towards the vision of being the centre of excellence for higher education.

Qualifications and Experience

1. Masters degree in Communications or Journalism or any related field
2. Bachelor’s degree in Communications or Journalism

Demonstration of:

1. Proficient written and spoken English
2. Ability to design and implement a communication strategy for complex institutions, including: formulating content and material that reflects our brand (distinctive ethos, programmes/services and products)
3. Knowledge of different target audiences and their particular needs for information, including different audiences inside and outside East Africa
4. Knowledge of modern communication methods including social networking and web strategy
5. Knowledge of Uganda, East Africa, and global media networks and the ability to place our content in them
6. Ability to quickly formulate responses to inquiries from a variety of sources about the University
7. Ability to motivate and mobilize staff, contributors, and contractors
8. Ability to quickly review materials submitted for approval and generate substantive as well as stylistic feedback.

The aims of this team are:

1. To market the University effectively to a wide range of audiences, both within the Uganda and beyond, including potential and current students, influencers, supporters, partners, staff, and the media
2. To work with Admissions, Quality Assurance, and Planning departments to plan and commission market research to support that goal
3. To communicate positive and consistent messages to all target audiences
4. To control and develop the University brand
5. To manage all corporate design, including the corporate visual identity
6. To ensure that the content and presentation of all forms of corporate communication, both traditional and new media, are of a consistently high quality
7. To provide strategic direction in the development and management of key University events
8. To work with colleagues across the University to deliver the best possible customer service (both internal and external) .
9. Consultation with office responsible for development
10. Promote a methodology that enables the University to qualitatively and quantitatively measure communications and marketing strategy
11. Manage photographic and video services for the University

The Manager will be a visionary thinker and will have excellent managerial, marketing and inter-personal skills, highly-developed communication skills, experience in managing staff and budgets and a strong commitment to customer service.

Main duties and Responsibilities

1. Inspire and develop the Communications and Marketing team, which includes events as well as corporate communications & marketing
2. Working with the Academic Affairs Division, deans, regional colleges and other University departments to ensure coordination between the development and implementation of the University’s communications and marketing strategy and its recruitment (students and staff) strategy
3. Direct the management and development of the University brand, ensuring that all communication and marketing activities reflect the Uganda Christian University brand, and its associated vision, purpose and values
4. Communicate a positive and consistent image of the University, both internally and externally
5. Develop the University’s career and placement strategy to provide market place opportunities for our students and build stakeholder partnerships
6. Promote the University and its associated activities effectively to a wide range of audiences, both in the Uganda, the region and beyond, working with faculties and the University management
7. Proactively manage media relations and media coverage
8. Provide direction for promotional material (including on-line and visual materials and advertising) and internal and external communications in all media
9. Monitor the management of relationships with external agencies in relation to PR, design, printers - ensuring quality of service and value-for-money
10. Support, maintain and develop key relationships with individuals, external groups, partner organisations, influencers, local communities and other stakeholders
11. Provide strategic direction for the planning and management of major corporate marketing events
12. Represent the University at external functions where appropriate
13. Identify opportunities to collaborate with other areas to achieve the targets set out in the strategic plan
14. Work closely with senior management in responding to any crisis that requires the support of the communications team, and be part of the crisis management team
15. Fulfil any general duties required of a Head of Department, including: leading and developing the service to ensure continuous improvement; preparing local plans; preparing and managing delegated budgets; organising staff appraisals; ensuring appropriate staff development is undertaken and communicating with staff on a regular basis.
16. Guiding work to affirm and test the University’s brand personality in its different markets and ensuring that all communications reflect the brand.
