This is an exciting opportunity to support the service provision of speech and language therapy to some of Zambia’s most marginalised communities.
What does the role involve?
You will work with the EGPAF to develop community based speech and language therapy services for children and young people living with HIV/AIDS. To do this you will:
- Develop appropriate and accessible assessment tools to help clinicians and community volunteers to assess children’s speech and language strengths and weaknesses
- Train clinicians and community volunteers in basic speech and language assessment
- Train clinicians, caregivers and community volunteers in basic intervention strategies
- Coach and mentor clinicians, caregivers and community volunteers in speech and language therapy interventions
- Participate in the development of a community sensitisation programme
- Assist in developing the role of the speech and language therapy creatively so as to best meet the objectives of the service.
- Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and reporting, alongside the EGPAF core team.
Skills, qualifications and experience required
You’ll be a qualified speech and language therapist, with a minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience including working with under 5s and their care givers. You’ll have experience of working in community based intervention programmes and some basic experience in occupational therapy. You’ll also have experience of training and capacity building others in conducting assessments and basic interventions. You’ll need to be creative with limited resources and able to work with children and families from different cultural backgrounds. In addition to all this you’ll be a flexible and creative person able to build strong relationships and above all have a sense of adventure!

You’ll be based in Lusaka the capital city of Zambia. This is a voluntary role. We’ll ask you to commit 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country we’ll help you resettle and we’ll invite you to stay involved with us through campaigning, development awareness raising and fundraising.
