GOAL has been working in South Sudan since 1998. GOAL South Sudan currently has four programme sites: Twic County, Warrap; Agok, Abyei Administrative Area (AAA); Sobat and Maban, Upper Nile State; The current GOAL programmes focuses on four main sectors: Primary health care, Nutrition, Water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH), women’s Adult literacy Education Programme (REFLECT) and sustainable livelihoods. Nutrition and Community health promotion would target all the three refugee camps of Jamam, Batil and Doro.
General Description of the Role
The Nutrition Officer (NO) will directly be line managed by the Nutrition Manager. The NO will line manage, coordinate and supervise the activities of locally recruited team of 25 Community Nutrition promoters (CNPs) and a team to run Supplementary Feeding Programmes (SFPs). The NO will link the outreach programmes to GOAL’s curative operations and will provide guidance and support to all nutrition staff on nutrition promotion and malnutrition preventative measures. The NO will be responsible for the management of the implementation of nutrition promotion activities in Batil, Jamam and in Bunj including messaging on nutrition in pregnancy, exclusive breastfeeding, balanced diet and complementary feeding.
Specific areas of programme activity include: •Support the roll out of community and nutrition promotion programme in the three sites including SFPs in Batil camp; •Organise community outreach and mobilisation to include screening and referral, OTP absentee and defaulter tracing where GOAL operates OTPs; •Conducting public health nutrition education promotion with a focus on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF); •Assistance with multi-indicator cluster surveys and qualitative assessment as required; •Regular nutrition reporting, monitoring and evaluation.
Key Duties •Participate in set-up, implementation and monitoring of the management of acute malnutrition in specified sites in close collaboration with the Nutrition Manager. •Conduct nutrition screening through mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of children 6-59 months old and refer as required to OTPs/SCs. •Provide OTP services in Jamam health facility and monitor and evaluate the OTP, including investigation if indicators are not within acceptable parameters. •Organise the CNPs to carry out community based nutrition activities in Batil camp and Jamam camp including the promotion of appropriate Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices and how to achieve a balanced diet through food quantity, quality and cooking practices. •Support Blanket/ Targeted Supplementary Feeding (BSFP/TSFP) for children 6-59 months and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) in Batil camp. •Collect routine nutrition data from health facilities and camps and report stock levels in time for the orders to be placed to avoid stock rupture. •Promote close collaboration between the Nutrition team, the Community Health team, the WASH team and other sectors to conduct outreach screening and referrals of malnourished children and provide appropriate messaging to prevent further malnutrition. •Involve local community leaders as well as REFLECT circles and other women’s groups in the nutrition programme activities and for nutrition promotion days to ensure community agreement and acceptance. •Compile accurate weekly, monthly and quarterly reports. •Any other duty as requested by the line manager.
Required and desired experience /qualifications: •Qualified Nutritionist; •Previous nutrition work experience including the management of acute malnutrition with international organisations/agencies in Southern Sudan; •Experience in training, managing and motivating staff/volunteers; •Fluent in spoken and written English; •Staff management experience and good inter-personnel skills; •Respect of the local culture and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment; •IT literate; •Flexible and highly motivated team player; •Ability to work effectively in basic and difficult field environments for long periods
