Uwezo seeks to improve children’s learning in East Africa through public engagement. Its work involves undertaking large-scale household-based assessments of numeracy and literacy of children aged 6-16 years, communicating the results widely and imaginatively, and using them to trigger broad public action to hold governments to account and improve learning.
Overall Responsibility:
You shall be responsible for overall success and effectiveness of Uwezo in Uganda. You shall plan, manage and report; support and oversee country efforts; fundraise; and steer the assessment and communication work. You will develop, foster and ensure adherence to high standards.
Specific Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, strategic reflection and direction for effective realization of Uwezo’s objectives;
- Maintain the highest levels of management and accountability standards in conformity with applicable laws, agreements and set standards;
- Prepare and submit quality and timely plans, budgets, and reports;
- Implement activities as per the approved plans in a timely manner and in adherence with the Uwezo standards;
- Support, supervise, and manage the Uwezo Uganda staff ensuring that they meet their contractual obligations;
- Support the implementation of the communication strategy and ensure effective information and communication sharing;
- Provide oversight for the overall Communications/ publications portfolio, including the website and other social media, ensuring high quality and standards;
- Keep abreast of new ideas and materials in the area of organizational learning, M&E and communications;
- Communicate Uwezo’s work in Uganda and outside, including with the media and the government;
- Mobilize resources for Uwezo;
- Ensure that the advisory and technical committees are well constituted, meet as per the plan, and contribute to the realization of the Uwezo objectives;
- Serve as the main communication and administrative link to the Regional office;
- Respond to support requests by the Regional Manager, Uwezo or Head, Twaweza.
General Responsibilities
- Conduct occasional research and writing assignments on Uwezo in diverse ways supportive to program goals, including internal learning, policy debates, opinion articles;
- Participate in the Uwezo processes (training, assessment);
- Undertake the activities above in line with the associated budgets and with work plans, in ways that are consistent with Twaweza policies;
- Participate in meetings and sessions as needed;
- Undertake any other lawful tasks as may be assigned by your manager or the Head of Twaweza.
Education, skills and experience
- A PhD degree in Education or a relevant field, minimum 7 years experience;
- Good understanding of East Africa with detailed knowledge of education and research, data management, and analysis;
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to nurture staff to register outputs;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Kiswahili;
- Basic bookkeeping knowledge and interest to learn financial management;
- Excellent computer skills and knowledge of computer-based packages for large-scale data;
- Creative thinker, imaginative, able to think outside the box;
- Able to be on top of issues and deliver quality on time;
- Deep commitment to education for all and civic-driven democratic change.
