BeadforLife, a 501(c) (3) Colorado nonprofit organization/Ugandan NGO, is looking for a Full-Time Assistant Controller to work in our Kampala, Uganda office. BeadforLife eradicates extreme poverty by creating bridges of understanding between impoverished Africans and concerned world citizens. Ugandan women earn income by making beads or selling Shea nuts, leading to sustainable long-term economic opportunity. In the developed world, BeadforLife works to educate and engage citizens about extreme poverty and to offer effective ways for them to take action to end it.
The Assistant Controller is responsible for the overall management and accountability of our Uganda programs’ financial operations and will manage the Uganda Finance Team. The Assistant Controller is a member of the Uganda office management team and reports directly to the International Business Director.
We are looking for a leader who can inspire staff, maintaining the team spirit that exists throughout our organization, while conducing and monitoring all financial matters in an ethical and professional manner. The Assistant Controller must be thoroughly competent in cash management, accounting, and financial reporting and have the ability to balance the program and financial needs of the organization. They must thrive in a fast paced work environment and understand the complexities of working in the developing world.
Responsibilities:
• Managing the daily finance and accounting details of our Uganda offices, including Cash management, General Ledger oversight, Accounts receivable/payable, and Payroll
• Establishing and implementing effective financial procedures with strong internal controls for all Uganda offices and insuring compliance
• Working with the Uganda Management Team to provide financial oversight of all program areas.
• Positively managing finance team members to carry out day-to-day responsibilities, guiding them to grow professionally and personally.
• Working collaboratively with the International Business Director to insure financial integrity and strength that supports the overall growth of the organization.
• Working with the Inventory Team to accurately track and value all inventory.
• Preparing monthly, quarterly and yearly financial statements, along with results review and summary
• Supporting quarterly internal audit
• Compiling and monitoring annual budget, working with program staff to create and manage budgets effectively
• Provide regular financial reports to the program teams in Uganda to insure accountability and develop increased financial skills within the team
• Ensure all expenditures are within approved budgets
• Leading annual external audit
Qualifications:
We are looking for a dynamic and trust-worthy professional who has a strong desire to manage the financial operations and provide principled leadership to our Ugandan finance team. The right candidate will thrive in a fast-paced and changing work environment and be adaptable and respond well to the unexpected. They will have a kind management style, and will be dedicated to poverty eradication in Uganda. We are looking for someone who can be focused on cash oversight and internal controls on a daily basis while also providing strategic insight. Specific qualifications include:
• A deep commitment to serving the women of Uganda
• Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration, or demonstrated knowledge of financial management
• A minimum of 5 years of finance/accounting experience
• Outstanding communications skills, especially across cultures and continents
• Ability to effectively manage a small team
• Expertise with QuickBooks or other accounting software (both entry and review) is preferred and Microsoft Office (Excel) is required
• Cost accounting and manufacturing knowledge preferred
• Outstanding organizational and analytical skills, especially the ability to assess and troubleshoot finance and information issues
• Flexibility and adaptability
• Experience implementing and overseeing guidance of internal controls
• Background in poverty eradication, income generation, microfinance, or small business is helpful
