ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

The University of Ottawa, Canada’s University, is one of our nation’s largest comprehensive universities. The Vice-President, Resources oversees the management of uOttawa’s human, financial, information technology and physical resources, as well as facilities planning, security and parking, housing, community life, occupational health and safety, enterprise risk management, food services and sports services. The Vice-President, Resources is a member of uOttawa’s Administration Committee, along with the President and four other Vice-Presidents. This individual works regularly with the Deans of the University, and participates in Board of Governors meetings and a number of its committees.

SCOPE

Reporting directly to the President and Vice-Chancellor, and working closely with the other Vice Presidents, Deans, and the Board of Governors, the Vice-President Resources is a critical member of the University’s executive management team. The Vice-President Resources sets strategic goals and priorities in line with the university’s long-term Strategic Plan, and the overall vision and mission of the University

The Vice-President Resources provides leadership to and directs the University's human, financial, information technology and physical resources, as well as facilities planning, security and parking, housing, community life, occupational health and safety, enterprise risk management, food services and sports services.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Human Resources
The Vice-President, Resources oversees the office of the Associate Vice President, HR and the team of professionals who provides the University with high standards of service in the area of staff management, employee relations and organizational development, and also provides the University with leadership in establishing and maintaining innovative and efficient HR programs that help it achieve its objectives and goals.

Financial Resources
The Vice-President, Resources oversees the office of the Associate Vice President, Financial Resources whose role is to ensure that the University's stewardship and strategic responsibilities are met and demonstrated through core accounting and financial reporting functions, policy development and enforcement, and the management of complex financial risks (investments, pensions, endowments, etc).

Student Services
The Vice-President, Resources oversees the Associate Vice President, Student Services who is dedicated to continuous improvement of the student experience and provides strategic direction to the following services: sports services, housing and conventions services, food services, community life service, the University of Ottawa bookstore, and materials management services.

Computing and Communication Services
The Vice-President, Resources oversees the Chief Information officer who provides University faculty, students and staff with a reliable, secure and effective IT infrastructure and Implements innovative IT solutions that transform how people learn, teach, conduct research, and work.

Physical Resources
The Vice-President, Resources oversees the office of Physical Resources that operates and maintains University facilities and infrastructure services necessary to achieve its academic and research objectives and meet the housing, social and athletic needs of students; as well, it provides facilities planning capacity and construction management.

Protection Services
The Vice-President, Resources oversees the office of Services that provides security services to over 40,000 people on campus. Protection Services is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round and are responsible for over 900 security cameras and thousands of alarm systems across the campuses.

Enterprise Risk Management
The Vice-President, Resources oversees the office of Risk Management that promotes an environmentally responsible, safe and healthy environment for University staff, faculty, students and visitors. Some areas of risk management covered by legislation, regulations or policy include: biosafety, construction projects, controlled goods, clinical placement, emergency response and recovery, environmental management, fire prevention, hazardous waste program, immunizations, indoor air quality, laser safety, occupational health and safety, ozone and green house gases, police checks, radiation and ionizing, recycling, transportation of dangerous goods and X-ray safety programs.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Relevant combination of professional and academic experience, complemented by a proven track record of managing in large, bilingual, multi-faceted milieus
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively increasing/greater executive level management experience in directing operations, resources, fiscal management and have a deep understanding of the post-secondary education sector.
  • Experience setting strategic goals and priorities, monitoring performance, and evaluating results to ensure that departmental and organizational objectives and operating requirements are met.
  • Experience working with a Board of Governors which comprises community leaders and stakeholders.
  • Experience in and an understanding of how to achieve results in an academic environment.

EDUCATION:

  • Post-secondary education at the Masters level is preferred.

LANGUAGES:

  • The ability to communicate fluently (written and spoken) in both English and French is required
