ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING AND REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: This Associate Humanitarian Affairs Officer position is located in the Emergency Preparedness Section (EPS), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Geneva. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Section. Within the delegated authority, the Associate Humanitarian Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
RESPONSIBILITIES: In consultation with the Chief of Section or a senior Humanitarian Affairs Officer: Assists in the design and preparation of studies on humanitarian, disaster, emergency relief and related issues in particular on disaster preparedness and contingency planning, early warning and in various follow-up activities; Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources on assigned topics/issues; Contributes to the preparation of various written documents on issues related to disaster preparedness and contingency planning, e.g. drafts sections of studies, background papers, policy guidelines, parliamentary documents etc.; Develops and maintains reference/resource information on specific topics or policy-related issues in particular concerning normative and operational aspects of disaster preparedness; responds to various inquiries and information requests internally and externally; Assist in the communication and information sharing tasks of the section; Assists in the organization of meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops, etc. with other agencies and partners to facilitate exchanges of professional expertise and views on disaster preparedness and contingency planning as reporter to such events; Maintains awareness of current humanitarian affairs and related issues, to include relevant political, policy, gender considerations or other developments in disaster preparedness and contingency planning, specific subject area, country or region concerned, Participates in technical assistance, disaster assessment or other mission, Participates in project/programme formulation and mobilization of relevant resource, Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience
EDUCATION: Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, social science, international studies, or humanitarian affairs or related area is required; A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in combination of qualifying relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of advanced university degree.
WORKING EXPERIENCE: A minimum two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development, or related area (No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination).
LANGUAGE: For this position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; Knowledge of French is desirable.
