Lumwana Mining Company located in Zambia is wholly owned by Barrick Gold Corporation and operates one of the largest new copper mines to be developed globally over the last decade. The mine is seeking a proactive and self-motivated Safety Superintendent to coordinate safety programmes at the Lumwana Project to a standard that is compatible with international practice. The appointee will report to the Health & Safety Manager and will be responsible for the following duties and activities:
- Promotion of site safety policies through workforce by developing and implementing systems to be accessed and utilized across all departments
- Develop and implement safety management system compatible with requirements of OHSAS 18001Prepare safety statistics on a monthly basis, analyse and report trends
- Oversee mentoring / development of Zambian staff to international standards of experience
- Ensure continuous improvement in H&S through development of people, systems and equipment
- Investigate incidents to discover root cause and corrective action developed and implemented promptly
- Review and assess Risk Management practices
- Demonstrate empathetic leadership qualities and provide sound direction to work teams to achieve desired outcomes
Skills & Abilities
The successful applicant must have the following qualifications/skills:
- Science or Engineering Degree
- Qualifications in Health & Safety will be added advantage
- Eight years experience with at least three years in open pit mining environment
- Working knowledge of Safety systems ISO, AS or NOSA based
- Experience in participating and leading incident investigations
- Experience in developing and implementing safety practices and procedures
- Competent in Microsoft Office Suite
- Good written and oral communication skills.
