What is the Public Health Promoter’s (PHP) Register?
The Public Health Promoters Register is a data base of Public Health Promoters and Public Health Coordinators with experience in Water and Sanitation related Public Health in Emergency Programmes. Each person on the register has been interviewed and reference checked and has agreed that should a suitable short-term deployment arise when they are available, they will work for OGB on a fixed term contract basis at short notice.
What is a Public Health Coordinator (WASH)?
When humanitarian emergencies arise, our Humanitarian Support Personnel and Register Public Health Coordinators and Public Health Promoters form the backbone of Oxfam’s immediate and most valuable response. Experienced in humanitarian crises the world over, the results achieved by the Public Health team are truly astounding. A diverse and international group, they provide support where it’s needed most, coordinating with other agencies, working with communities, other Oxfam teams and partner organisations to provide emergency aid, and pave the way for long-term development work.
What you’ll be doing as a Public Health Coordinator
In the event of a natural or man-made Emergency, you’ll be there to provide vital technical assistance relating to Public Health. You will lead Public Health teams and coordinate with other agencies in assessment and programme implementation to make sure all Public Health issues are understood and promoted, and you’ll mobilise whole communities to proactively respond to the situations themselves. In particular, you’ll assess public health risks, lead a team of national and international health promoters, and identify any unmet needs that affect the population. Within the context of each new environment, you’ll implement appropriate health promotion initiatives, monitoring and evaluating the programme as you go. What’s more, you’ll involve the men and women in the communities you are working with in the planning and implementing of public health activities, and recruit and train staff when on deployment.
What are we looking for?
With a graduate qualification in Social Sciences, Environmental or Public Health or related discipline, you’ll meet the academic requirements of the role. Above anything else, we value first-hand experience in emergency situations and experience in leading teams and coordinating with other agencies in emergencies. With community-based experience in areas like Community Development, Community water supply, adult education and HIV/AIDS, you’ll bring much needed structure and support to the most difficult environments. You’ll also be confident in people management and capacity building, have strong communications skills and bring a collaborative approach to your work, along with sensitivity to cultural differences and the ability to work in a whole range of cultural contexts. Good spoken and written English is essential and being able to communicate fluently in either French or Spanish would be an advantage.
