Lumwana Mining Company located in Zambia is wholly owned by Barrick Gold Corporation and operates one of the largest new copper mines to be developed globally over the last decade. The mine is seeking an experienced and self-motivated Mine Manager to coordinate all mining operational aspects of the Lumwana project including management of the mine production and mine project sections as well as earthworks contractors. The appointee will report to the Operations Manager and will be responsible for the following duties and activities:
- Provide the leadership necessary to ensure positive and effective implementation of LMC’s OH&S policy and procedures, and overarching statutory requirements
- Establish short and long term budgets to accurately forecast the performance and efficiency of the Mining Department business unit, including Life of Mine plans. Ensure compliance with these forecasts by regular monitoring and control and acting to correct negative deviations and to take advantage of opportunity
- Ensure all National, International and Company rules, regulations and procedures relating to Safe Working Environment practices, Occupational Health and Safety and sound business behaviour are observed
- Provide support to review every aspect of the Mining Operations and Projects sections to ensure that opportunities to add value and increase stakeholder wealth are identified and implemented
- Provide a working environment that ensures employees gain new skills and achieve their full potential and oversee mentoring/development of Zambian staff to international standards of experience, training and performance
- Achieve agreed environmental targets, legal compliance and incident prevention. Lead and promote the development of a culture of workforce environmental care and respect.
- Ensure the ongoing use of the Mining Management Operating System
- Become actively involved in company’s aims and objectives of engaging with the local community and strive to leave a positive impact on the longer-term outcomes for local people. Promote the integration between this engagement and the success of the business
· Select and manage consultants to ensure a clear scope of work is always established and that all agreed deliveries are achieved in a cost effective manner.
Skills & Abilities
The successful applicant must have the following qualifications/skills:
- A recognized Degree or Diploma in Engineering, Mining, Geology or similar discipline.
- Minimum of 15 years mining industry experience, covering all technical and managerial aspects of large scale open pit mine.
- Prior experience in similar roles in Sub-Sahara Africa with demonstrated positive outcomes an advantage
- Prior experience in copper operations an advantage
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead teams of highly skilled and experienced personnel having diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Experience in managing department costs and budgeting
- Competent in the use of applicable Mining Softwares
- Good written and oral communication skills.
