Kenya Project Development - Intern (Non Remunerated Internship)

NON-REMUNERATED INTERNSHIP

Vacancy Notice no: IOM/110/11 Functional Title: Project Development - Intern Duty Station: Nairobi (Kenya) Duration of Assignment: 6 months (un-renewable)

  1. Background Information The intern will be placed at the Project Development and Implementation Unit in Nairobi. One of the main functions of the Project Development and Implementation Unit (PDIU) is to enhance the functions of the office through project/programme development and implementation and effective coordination with IOM field missions within Kenya and the Horn of Africa.

  2. Objective of the assignment Working under the direct guidance and supervision of the Programme Development Officer, the intern will provide technical assistance and facilitation in the development and design of new projects / programmes to be implemented in Kenya and the Horn. The Intern assignments will include:

  3. Consult and understand all relevant documents on IOM project / programme development and implementation;
  4. Familiarize himself/herself with IOM service areas and read the major guiding documents for each area as well as examples of projects implemented under each area in the region. In particular focus on irregular migration, labour migration, forced migration, migration and development, assisted voluntary return, etc.
  5. Assist identifying potential programmes and formulate project proposals in the relevant IOM service areas by conducting background research, and preparing initial drafts and edit drafts following instructions from project development staff and RO Pretoria, and according to required formats;
  6. Assist the PDIU in identifying and contacting potential partners among civil society, governments in the region, and international organizations;
  7. Conduct a desk study including a review of major (potential) donors’ country strategy papers for Kenya and the Horn; identify synergies with IOM’s programme and make recommendations on further donor engagement;
  8. Research new potential funding opportunities, particularly within the private sector, for future IOM project development in Kenya and the Horn region;
  9. Develop a draft strategy on how to approach donors within the private sector.
  10. Accompany the PDIU to meetings with potential donors resident in Nairobi and assist the PDIU staff in organizing larger donor meetings;
  11. Assist in the maintenance of the resource mobilization matrix, which contains all existing programmes as well as all potential programmes with remaining funding requirements;
  12. Draft internal and external reports, power point presentations or other documents and assist the PDIU staff in responding to requests for information from HQ, other missions or others;
  13. Assist in editing and formatting all documents produced by the unit;
  14. Perform other duties as maybe assigned from time to time.

Outputs: 1. Updated resource mobilization matrix of IOM activities in Kenya & the Horn of Africa. 2. Updated donor profiles. 3. At least one full project proposal developed by the intern from A to Z (PDIU staff supervision). 4. A draft strategy on IOM engagement with private sector donors.

Personal development: Acquire technical knowledge in the area of project development, including identification of programme needs and funding opportunities, drafting of project proposal, communication and liaison with partner organizations, UN agencies and government officials, donor relations as well as familiarity and understanding of thematic migration issues (in line with IOM service areas). Finally the intern will experience working in an international multi-cultural environment, with an intergovernmental organization and in a very dynamic and active team of colleagues.

Qualifications 1. A degree in political/social sciences in a relevant field (development studies, international relations etc.); 2. Familiarity with the political and general situation in the region and past work experience in Africa is an advantage; 3. Proven experience writing and editing technical documents in English; 4. Excellent written and spoken English (preferably at mother tongue level); 5. Working or volunteering experience with a humanitarian organization is an advantage; 6. Excellent communication skills; 7. Exposure to developing private sector donor relationships for NGOs or IGOs a plus; 8. General Skills/Disposition: curiosity, diplomacy and tact, flexible and able to adapt quickly to new, different environments, dynamic and results-driven, team player. 9. Proven analytical and drafting skills, capable of working under pressure, eager to learn; 10. Working knowledge of MS Office and Internet applications; 11. Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
