The Health & Environment Alliance is recruiting a Chemicals Policy Assistant for a six month period from January 2012 until July. The main activities of the intern will be to assist in HEAL’s activities on chemicals policies which aim to reduce the harmful effects of hazardous chemicals on human health through public education and policy advocacy at EU level. The assistant will work closely with the Executive Director and the Toxics Policy Advisor.

Main responsibilities
The Chemicals policy assistant will support HEAL’s advocacy work on chemicals and health through the following tasks:
- Provide coordination for development of policy and scientific briefings on chemicals and diseases, specifically endocrine disruptors for EU policy development
- Provide coordination for dissemination and outreach to our network of scientists, health affected groups, medical experts and national experts
- Contribute to development of information material, social media tools, and communications work
- Provide logistical and organisational support for events and meetings
- Help manage campaigns and mailings to HEAL’s partners and members, EU institutions
- Assist in development and production of the Chemicals Health Monitor Bulletin, a quarterly update with the latest science on the health effects of chemicals.
- Carry out other duties that may reasonably be required in the light of the main purpose of the job.
Educational/professional qualifications
- Graduate - bachelor degree
- Previous work or internship experience in communicating on chemicals policy
- Some journalism or online communication training
- Working knowledge of EU institutions and processes
Skills and abilities
- Very good written and spoken English and French (or another EU language)
- Excellent working knowledge of standard office software (Word, Powerpoint, Excel)
- Excellent communication and intrapersonal skills
- Self starter and reliable, ability to multitask and work in tight deadlines, and fast learner
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Conditions
- Belgian contract of “professional immersion” of EUR 700 per month
- Duration of 6 months, start date as soon as possible in January
