Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Research Group, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton
The National Oceanography Centre, part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world.
With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK's leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development. Working closely with its partners and associates it provides capability to meet the needs across the UK marine science community.
We are seeking to appoint a Staff Scientist in the field of Marine CO2 research. The postholder will be expected to develop and implement a novel, imaginative and world-class research programme in Marine CO2 research in the context of NERC strategic priorities including the TAP actions in greenhouse gas (http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/themes/tap/tap-phase3.asp#greenhouse); shelf seas biogeochemistry (http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/themes/tap/tap-phase3.asp#shelf) and the Integrated Carbon Observing System (http://www.icos-infrastructure.eu/). Representative activities might include diagnosing the air sea CO2 flux from observations, evaluating the effect of CO2 on marine organisms or estimating anthropogenic storage of CO2 i in the deep ocean.
The OBE group is well equipped to host such a programme with dedicated laboratory and analytical facilities, regular access to shipboard sampling programmes and mooring infrastructure. In addition, we represent a critical mass of expertise in the oceanic biological sequestration of carbon and our co-location with the School of Ocean and Earth Science of the University of Southampton allows for student co-supervision.
