Background / General description: | IFC has been actively investing in the health and education (“H&E”) sectors in 2001 and has since become the largest international financier of health and education companies in the emerging world. Today, the H&E sectors are one of the key pillars of IFC s growth strategy. IFC s strategy in H&E in Sub-Saharan Africa (“SSA”) focuses on providing funding for (i) strategic clients, primarily large for-profit networks of hospitals, outpatient clinics, universities and schools, which have ability to operate in several markets and proactively expand their reach; (ii) banks for on-lending to small H&E providers, student loans, medical equipment leasing, etc; and (iii) clients able to establish centers of excellence. The H&E sub-sector has also developed proprietary advisory services programs which it uses to support its sector clients as well as banks investments in H&E. In SSA, IFC also recently launched a major initiative with the World Bank, Gates Foundation, and other donors focused on improving the engagement of African governments with the private health sector. This Health in Africa (“HiA”) initiative aims to: (i) step up IFC s engagement and support of Africa s private health sector, through new financing instruments (e.g. regional equity funds and lines of credit); (ii) conduct country level analytical work and advisory services to governments on policy issues to support private sector engagement in countries which contributes to social goals; and (iii) develop a set of statistical indicators to benchmark country performance on private sector engagement effectiveness across countries and over time in a biennial report. Work on the HiA initiative commenced in early 2009. The two key functions of this position are to: (i) drive IFC s H&E investment activities across SSA; and (ii) be an integral part of the HiA team and to take the lead role in delivering on the investment objectives of that program. | Duties and Accountabilities: | Key tasks to be undertaken by the Senior Investment Officer will include, but not be limited to: Lead and develop the team of investment professionals who are a part of the H&E team in SSA (currently in Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Lagos) to achieve IFC s objectives for H&E in SSA Lead the investment component of the HiA program, working closely with the HiA team. Also, play a co-leadership role in that team in conjunction with the HiA leader for policy and analytical work Represent the investment side of IFC in the HiA team and report to management as appropriate Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, global and regional private businesses, banking and multilateral partners and government officials to further develop the sector and to develop specific investment opportunities for IFC Collaborate in developing sector and/or regional strategies and support related promotion work, including targeting potential investments and policy advisory work Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close new transactions, portfolio restructurings, reschedulings, capital increases, equity sales, etc in the H&E sub-sectors Lead negotiation/documentation teams; use strong negotiation skills to develop solutions and overcome impasses in straightforward and complex transactions Monitor, manage, and report on the performance of the portfolio of investments made Collaborate with colleagues in various departments to deliver on the above objectives Lead and manage project teams Coordinate closely with social, environmental, and technical assistance colleagues in order to add value to our clients' businesses, find pragmatic solutions to the specific sector challenges, and achieve sustainable development impact | Selection Criteria: | MBA or equivalent qualification Following graduate studies, have at least 4 years of experience in finance with a proven track-record of business development, structuring, assessing, and closing investments Knowledge of and experience in emerging markets. Experience in SSA would be an advantage Excellent business development and client relationship skills, including a track record and ability to focus on clients needs effectively Sound business judgment in identifying potential business partners Strong financial and credit skills; demonstrated ability to structure a variety of complex financial instruments (debt and equity) Ability to interact directly and independently with the senior management of potential clients, of financial and technical partners as well as senior government officials Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Verbal and written capabilities in French, whilst not required, would be a significant advantage Strong inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds Highly motivated, committed to highest ethical standards Genuine commitment to sustainable development Willingness to travel extensively |
