SENIOR METALLURGIST
African Barrick Gold’s Bulyanhulu Gold Mine seeks to employ an experienced Senior Metallurgist to provide technical expertise to the Process Plant in order to achieve optimum metallurgical performance at the least operating cost possible. The incumbent will be responsible to train the national metallurgists in the conduct of metallurgical tests that are tools in either assessing metallurgical upsets or those that can initiate improvement in the performance of the plant.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provide the leadership necessary to ensure that employees and contractors adhere to safety and environmental standards that exceed worldwide industry standards and any applicable legislation
• Provide technical assistance to the operations group in assessing metallurgical upsets in the plant and come up with a defined solution for similar occurrences in the future
• Ensure adherence to all BGML policies and procedures
• Determine and ensure the achievement of optimum and cost effective metallurgical performance through active participation in the activities of the Metallurgical team, liaison with operations and maintenance as well as the ongoing training and development of Process Operators
• Provide technical input to the development and implementation of Process Plant operations strategies, budgets and plans to support production objectives and optimise financial results for BGML
• Analyse and ensure the accuracy and reliability of daily metallurgical figures
• Regularly review the operating parameter guideline used by the operation and assess if revisions have to be made based on what is seen in the day to day operation
• Identify improvement opportunities and focus on research and development and test work programmes for immediate and long term improvements
• Develop and implement optimisation and cost reduction strategies on consumables
• Complete concentration and bullion metallurgical accounting including assay exchanges
• Provide support of staff to meet objectives on time and on budget and take appropriate action to rectify any substandard performance or behaviour
• Provide required training and mentoring to develop and maintain a competent and results orientated Metallurgical team, and to ensure that employees gain new skills and achieve their full potential
• Monitor the services provided by the Metallurgical laboratory to ensure that it supports the operational control needs of the operation group. Such services include metal circuit inventory, calibration of on-stream metal analyzer, cyanide analysers and preparation of reagents for leach circuit monitoring
• Monitor the quality of results generated by the Analytical Laboratory
• To carry out any other relevant duties as assigned by the Metallurgical Superintendent
PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Education Requirements:
• Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering / Metallurgy, Mineral Processing or Chemical Engineering
Experience Requirements:
• A minimum of 5 years experience in Process Plant Operations with exposure to sulphide flotation, gold recovery by gravity and carbon-in-leach process
• Computer literate MS Office – Word, Excel etc.
• Previous experience working in a multi cultural environment
