The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research universities in the world. In addition to its 11 faculties, the University includes several independent institutes, some of which are jointly operated with other universities. Some 36,000 students are currently pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Helsinki.
Located on the Viikki Campus, the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry promotes the sustainable use of renewable natural resources and human wellbeing through scientific research and research-based teaching. The Faculty’s key areas of education and research include agricultural, food, consumer, forest and environmental sciences as well as biotechnology. The Faculty has 3,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs 500 experts.
The Department of Forest Sciences of the University of Helsinki (www.helsinki.fi/metsatieteet/) conducts research of a high international standard in forest sciences and provides academic teaching based on this research. Its multidisciplinary activities aim to promote the ecologically, financially and socially sustainable use of forests and peatland. Some 350 students are currently pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the Department, which employs a research and teaching staff of 140.
The Department of Forest Sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry of the University of Helsinki invites applications for a
PROFESSORSHIP IN NON-INDUSTRIAL PRIVATE FORESTRY
for a fixed term of five years. The professorship will be located at the Department of Forest Sciences of the University of Helsinki on the Viikki Campus and the Southern Unit of the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) in Vantaa.

According to Section 33 of the Universities Act (No 558/2009), a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific work, provide education based on it, follow developments in research, and participate in community relations and international cooperation in his or her field.
The professor will be responsible for teaching and research in the field of private forestry at the Department of Forest Sciences and Metla (www.metla.fi). The research and teaching fields of the position include 1) decision-making by non-industrial private forest owners, 2) the economic aspects of entrepreneurship associated with non-industrial private forestry, including the profitability of non-industrial private forestry and the operation of wood markets, 3) forest policy concerning non-industrial private forestry, and 4) non-wood values and their productisation in non-industrial private forests. The duties of the professor will also include active collaboration with for example actors in the field of non-industrial private forestry and the forestry sector in order to transfer knowledge and technology.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors are required to be competent in the language in which they provide instruction, in other words, Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, appointees must also have good English skills.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, scientific work outside Finland and international elected positions.
The salary will be based on levels 8-10 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
