The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research universities in the world. In addition to its 11 faculties, the University includes several independent institutes, some of which are jointly operated with other universities. Some 36,000 students are currently pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Helsinki.
Located on the Viikki Campus, the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry promotes the sustainable use of renewable natural resources and human wellbeing through scientific research and research-based teaching. The Faculty’s key areas of education and research include agricultural, food, consumer, forest and environmental sciences as well as biotechnology. The Faculty has 3,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs 500 experts.
The Department of Agricultural Sciences offers four major subjects: animal science, plant production biology, biotechnology related to animal science and plant production biology, and agrotechnology. It is also responsible for providing basic education in physics and botany at the Faculty. The Department aims to strengthen basic research in agriculture and to increase cooperation with applied research. The core research areas of the Department include energy efficiency in agricultural and horticultural production, fields and water systems, the use of genomic information, human and animal welfare and the overall management of plant protection.
The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry of the University of Helsinki invites applications for a
PROFESSORSHIP IN ANIMAL NUTRITION
The field of the professorship has been specified as animal nutrition with an emphasis on feed science and nutritional physiology.
According to Section 33 of the Universities Act (No 558/2009), a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific work, provide education based on it, follow developments in research, and participate in community relations and international cooperation in his or her field.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.
According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors are required to be competent in the language in which they provide instruction, in other words, Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, appointees must also have good English skills.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, scientific work outside Finland and international elected positions.
The salary will be based on levels 8–10 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
