INSTRUMENT MAKING POSITION NUMBER: PC00477
VACANCY: INSTRUMENT MAKER/SENIOR TECHNICIAN
(Total remuneration package: R217 800 – R290 400 p.a. – employer contributions in respect of benefits included)
The incumbent will be responsible for designing, drawing and manufacturing of research and educational equipment.
Minimum requirements are the following:
• Grade 12 or N3 with good marks in Science and Mathematics as subjects, as well as professional training as scientific instrument maker, toolmaker or related qualification
• 1 year’s appropriate experience in the following:
use of lathes, milling machines and other technical equipment
different welding techniques – platinum, gold, stainless steel, etc.
processing of rare and precious metals – from soapstone to platinum and gold
cutting of different gear profiles
nickel-plating of brass
anodising of aluminium
spray painting and engraving
• The ability to use the equipment accurately and safely
• Good interpersonal relations and the ability to function autonomously and as part of a team
• Above-average skills regarding imaginative and original thinking
• Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
• Good theoretical and practical knowledge of speciality
• The ability to liaise comfortably with researchers and principals
