BACKGROUND
The Head - Global Business and Biodiversity Programme is responsible for development and implementation of the IUCN programme on Business and Biodiversity, including provision of quality assurance for the IUCN Secretariat’s overall engagement with the business sector. Based in IUCN Headquarters, the Head is the focal point for all business and biodiversity related matters in IUCN regarding policy, programme development, resource mobilization and representation.
Overall Responsibility
The Head - Global Business and Biodiversity Programme has overall responsibility for managing the Business and Biodiversity Programme, both programmatically and operationally, on a day-to-day basis. At the programme level, the Head provides the leadership necessary to marshal the resources of the Business and Biodiversity Programme to serve IUCN’s Programme requirements and to advance the goals of IUCN’s Private Sector Strategy. At the operational level, s/he directs Business and Biodiversity Programme operations, providing the private sector with a window of greater access and opportunity to harness IUCN’s scientific knowledge, global reach, and unique convening role for achieving excellence in biodiversity conservation as a measure of good business and responsible corporate citizenry.
The Head, together with the Global Business and Biodiversity Programme team, seeks out and nurtures new relationships with companies committed to transformative change in regard to the impacts of their operations on biodiversity and natural resource-dependent communities, builds capacity among other components of IUCN to develop and manage such relationships, and guides the mainstreaming of business engagement for nature conservation across the organization. The Head pursues the Business and Biodiversity Programme mandate in close collaboration with relevant IUCN Members, Commissions, Global Thematic Programmes, Regional and Country Programmes, and a variety of partners.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Vision and Leadership
• Keep abreast of the global context for the Business and Biodiversity Programme work and provide a vision and strategic direction for IUCN’s work with the private sector;
• Catalyze wider organizational interest and support for private sector engagement in delivering IUCN’s mission and programme;
• Maintain and build private sector interest and confidence in IUCN as a source of credible advice and support for equitably and effectively addressing biodiversity conservation challenges in business and for raising performance standards in this regard; and
• Participate in the processes of organizational development and change, seeking business engagement as an effective tool for conservation, widely supported by IUCN members and leadership. - Programme Development
• Lead the development of the Union's Business and Biodiversity Programme, particularly concerning collaboration on business and biodiversity related activities with all IUCN Commissions, Regional and Country Offices and other thematic areas;
• Coordinate the implementation of IUCN’s Private Sector Strategy, to ensure components of IUCN function as an integrated team,high quality technical delivery and coherency and consistency of approach with respect to IUCN’s general policy;
• Promote within IUCN the role of the private sector in conservation, including developing and nurturing new partnerships with the interested private sector and other organizations;
• Lead the Business and Biodiversity Programme’s contributions to IUCN programme and policy including coordinating, promoting and supporting the process of regionalizing the Business and Biodiversity Programme;
• Promote IUCN members’ participation in Business and Biodiversity Programme work;
• Oversee due diligence processes for new corporate partnerships within IUCN;
• Ensure learning from the work of the Business and Biodiversity Programme and the implementation of the Private Sector strategy in general as a basis for furthering IUCN knowledge, capacity, profile and influence. - Policy and Communications
• Coordinate the analysis of, and advocacy for, transformative biodiversity-related corporate policy and associated enabling public policy. Disseminate policy information and advice on business to various parts of the Union and other networks in the most effective way;
• Ensure that IUCN is adequately represented in relevant international fora and negotiations on business and biodiversity;
• Foster develop and maintain appropriate collaboration and partnerships with relevant organisations - including, as appropriate, credible platforms that bring key stakeholders together to consider and resolve critical business and biodiversity-related challenges. - Management and resource mobilization
• Oversee the development and implementation of all business and biodiversity-related initiatives;
• Directly manage one (or more) high profile engagement(s);
• Manage the Business and Biodiversity Programme, including human and financial resources, budgets, communications, and planning, assessment and reporting as required by IUCN systems;
• Work closely with IUCN regions, Commissions and other thematic programmes to develop and maintain an appropriate project portfolio and funding for implementation of the Programme;
• Convene and facilitate advice from associated experts who provide guidance to the business and biodiversity management related activities of the Union;
• Seek and support capacity building in the various components of IUCN for reaching out to businesses and effectively engaging them in the mission and work of IUCN.
REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in conservation or natural resources management, 5 of which should be at senior level;
- PhD or Masters Degree in conservation or other relevant field;
- Excellent managerial, interpersonal and team building skills;
- Proven ability in programme development, fund raising, and financial management;
- Strong entrepreneurial orientation and skills;
- Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and produce high quality output;
- Knowledge and experience of strategic planning, policy, project/programme cycle management and performance management;
- Ability to work within and across highly diverse networks of professionals, to harness their strengths, and to effectively coordinate programme delivery through such networks;
- A good understanding of IUCN including its decentralized structure, Membership and Commissions;
- Adequate knowledge and skills in the use of relevant computer programmes;
- Fluency in written and spoken English and preferably one or more of IUCN's other official languages (French and Spanish).
SALARY
The gross annual salary for this position is in the range from CHF 138'080 to CHF 172'600, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax.APPLICATIONS
