Management
1. Sets direction and leads development, coordination and implementation of strategic plans aligned with the overall company strategy to ensure long-term profitability and growth.
2. Monitors performance against strategic plans, schedules, resources, risks and targets, taking corrective action on variances.
3. Develops annual plan and drives achievement of continuous improvement targets, ensuring each department develops and operates within a management operating system.
4. As a key member of African Barrick Gold’s senior leadership team, makes a positive and meaningful contribution to cross-organization initiatives.
5. Assesses, manages and optimizes the operating systems and relationships between the departments and Shared Services.
6. Provides overall leadership, support and coaching, while demonstrating adherence to the company’s core values.
7. Provides continuity of operations by ensuring that viable long-term plans are in place for seeking out, recovering and treating ore reserves on the company’s property.
8. Delivers monthly Operations Report to senior management.

1. Provides direction for the implementation of corporate and regional change. Remains current on changing legislation that affects operations, technologies and changes in market conditions and recommends or incorporates appropriate changes.

1. Develops and maintains positive relationships with stakeholders in the site’s mining activities, surrounding communities and indigenous populations, in accordance with organization’s Community Relations policies.

1. Ensures adherence and remains up-to-date with all relevant international, regional and local laws, statutes and regulations, and global corporate policies and procedures.
2. Seeks management approval prior to committing the operation to contractual arrangements, policy changes or industrial agreements that may impact on other global corporate areas.
Safety
1. Develops and maintains safe and healthy working conditions by educating staff and promoting a high level of health and safety awareness and ensuring adherence with all legislation, rules and regulations affecting the employment, health and safety of persons in mining operations.
2. Ensures all safety incidents are reported and investigated according to global corporate and statutory requirements and undertaking all recommended corrective actions.
Environment
1. Develops and implements the Environmental and Rehabilitation policy and plan to achieve management-approved environmental targets, legal compliance and incident prevention. Develops a culture of environmental care and respect.
2. Supports environmental programmes and ensures the relevant environmental standards are incorporated into site support work planning to minimize disturbance to the environment and local pastoral land.
3. Reports the effects of mining operations on the status of control and rehabilitation to the statutory authorities in accordance with the requirements of the Notice of Intent and Statutory Licences.
4. Ensures all environmental incidents are reported and investigated according to global corporate policy and statutory requirements and undertaking all recommended corrective actions.
Security
1. Ensures operational compliance with global corporate standards and systems and other security initiatives, reporting requirements, and develops security strategies and audit action plans.
2. Implements and maintains security electronics service contract or site-based capability.
Financial
1. Directs preparation of annual operating and capital budgets to provide management guidelines and goals, and contribute to the region’s financial plan.
2. Prepares, presents, implements and manages detailed operating and capital budgets, providing direction to ensure optimum utilization of human and financial resources.
3. Monitors and reviews operations expenditures on a monthly basis; investigates and explains all budget variances. Maintains and presents continuous forecasts for the remainder of each budget year.
4. Approves all expenditures in accordance with the Authorities Matrix.
Employee Development
1. Develops and maintains a departmental structure that adheres to Organisational Framework policy and enables teamwork and personal development, while focusing on the achievement of results that satisfy property and regional production, service and quality objectives.
2. Manages employees, consultants and contractors consistent with global corporate values and within approved budgetary limits and global corporate procedures, including: recruitment and selection, setting direction and work priorities, staff development, determining performance standards and conducting reviews, and handling labour relations matters.
3. Defines clear roles and accountabilities for each department and individual with goal-oriented development plans as part of the performance review process.

PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Education Requirements:
• B degree in Mining, Geological, Civil or Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent experience preferred.
• Graduate studies in business desired.
Experience Requirements:
• Five to ten years of experience at a senior managerial level with general oversight of an underground mining operation is preferred.
Specialized/Regional Skills or Certifications:
• Mine Manager’s Certificate
• Understands all relevant International, regional and local laws, statutes, regulatory requirements, and company policies and procedures affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry.
