The Africa Advocacy Director position is developed and approved by Save the Children members working in Africa as a part of the 2008 Africa Advocacy Initiative, establishing how we work collectively to advocate for specific issues impacting children in Africa by engaging pan-African bodies and national governments in addressing policy and resources. The Africa Advocacy Strategy and annual work plans focus on lobbying the African Union, as well as ensuring the flow of information within and between Save the Children country offices in Africa, to our various home offices, to African civil society partners and to the Save the Children advocacy offices in Geneva, Brussels and New York.
The purpose of the post is to lead in the implementation of the Save the Children Africa Advocacy Strategy
Responsibilities
- Lead, coordinate and facilitate the implementation of Save the Children Africa Advocacy Strategy.
- In consultation with the Steering Committee members, adjust the Advocacy Strategy to match rapid and changing opportunities.
- Map key targets for policy change, identify opportunities and challenges and assess its implications on African children.
- Ensure Save the Children engagement in key regional and continental policy debate related to children.
- Promote and coordinate children’s inclusion in implementation of advocacy strategy within national, regional and continental fora.
- Develop Pan-African projects that contribute to the achievement of the objectives outlined in the Advocacy Strategy.
- Develop and implement with TAT the annual operational plans;
- Manage budgets and reports for the funding institutions per their principles and guidelines.
- Represent Save the Children in regional and continental fora.
- Work with Save the Children communication focal points in Africa and home offices to position and help prioritize the children
Qualifications
- Ability to think strategically about Save the Children’s role in Africa
- At least five years’ experience in advocacy and campaigning on Africa policy issues.
- Proven track record in policy formulation and development.
- Excellent inter-personal skills.
- Excellent negotiation and positive persuasion skills.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English as well as one of the other official AU languages (Arabic, French or Portuguese).
- Knowledge of the AU, other regional institutions and the way they function.
- Good facilitation skills
- Flexible and adaptable to constantly changing operational environment
