Pact is a non-profit international development organization with a purpose to enable poor and marginalized people in the developing world to earn a dignified living, be healthy, and take part in the benefits that nature provides. We do this by developing people’s capacity to make informed choices about their life and future, improving governance systems, and transforming markets into a force for development. Pact has been working in the African Great Lakes for more than six years and is committed to a mining and minerals sector that is conflict free, contributes to the economic and social wellbeing of the people, and to the sustainable development of its natural resources and protection of its precious ecology. We believe that it is necessary to establish systems that provide good governance and security, promote rights-based development and a responsible economic and business sector. To that end, Pact is collaborating with ITRI, a tin industry membership organization, mineral traders and exporters, and Governments in the Great Lakes region to implement a chain of custody and due diligence scheme called the ITRI Tin Supply Chain Initiative (iTSCi). iTSCi allows buyers along the supply chain to determine the source of the raw minerals being produced and traded in the DRC and adjoining countries. The program creates verifiable chains of custody which allow for auditing and the detection of financial transactions which might be supporting conflict, and builds local capacity and infrastructure to make the system sustainable over time. Pilot studies show that it is possible to tag minerals at their source and to track them through the local trade to the point of export. We are now looking to scale up this solution throughout the Great Lakes Region.
