Duties & Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Support Officer, Support Assistants attend to practical needs of the beneficiaries
from the moment of their arrival in The Netherlands to the moment of their departure. Duties include but are
not limited to:
1. Keeping beneficiaries informed of what is happening and what is planned in relation to their court
appearance, and ensuring that beneficiaries understand Court processes as well as other processes relating to
their stay in The Netherlands;
2. Informing beneficiaries of their rights and duties in relation to the Court;
3. Coordinate with Operations and Protection units and with others as required, to ensure that beneficiaries
receive adequate services and that they arrive in a timely manner at all appointments and court appearances;
4. Providing support as required, monitoring the physical and emotional well-being of beneficiaries, identifying the
needs of beneficiaries, and alerting the Support Officer when required to ensure that needs are met;
5. Performing all these functions with discretion and utmost confidentiality; and
6. Acting as interpreter as required;
7. Performing other duties as required.
Support Assistant functions are required twenty four hours per day, seven days per week. Consequently,
Witness Assistants are required to work day, evening, and overnight shifts on a schedule to be determined by a
Support Officer and approved by the Chief, VWU.
Essential Qualifications
1. Completion of secondary education;
2. Six years of progressively responsible related experience;
3. Proven ability to deal effectively with persons of different cultural backgrounds;
4. Substantial training and experience in counselling persons who have suffered trauma;
5. Particular awareness and sensitivity to victims of sexual violence, children, the disabled and elderly;
6. Familiarity with Dutch administrative procedures, systems and culture;
7. Willingness to work days, evenings and nights as assigned;
8. Willingness to be deployed to VWU field missions as required.
Preference will be given to persons with previous experience in a judicial setting.
KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES
Fluency in either of the working languages of the Court, English or French, is essential. Working knowledge of
the other is desirable.
Knowledge of Dutch or of a language (Swahili, Lingala) relevant to the situations the Court is involved in is
considered an asset.
Knowledge of another official language of the Court would be considered an asset. (Arabic, Chinese, Russian,
Spanish)

ICC policy. The PSC process will include but will not be limited to, verification of the information provided in
the personal history form and a criminal record check;
