PURPOSE: The Child Friendly Space (CFS) Officer plays an important role in United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Sudan's program structure. UMCOR-NGO’s program areas in South Sudan focus primarily in the field of Emergency Relief and transitional development, which include but not limited to the following sectors; water and sanitation, food security, health, education/child protection, shelter, camp coordination, and community development. The position is based in Aweil, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The CFS Officer will be responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operation of UMCOR’s Child Friendly Spaces in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State.
Most specifically, the position will be directly charged with the following:
• Carry out activities at an assigned CFS on a daily basis. These activities include (1) supervising recreational activities for children and youth, (2) supervising literacy / numeracy instruction for youth and / or vulnerable adults, (3) meeting with community members to improve their understanding of child rights and brainstorm approaches for protecting the rights of vulnerable children and youth within the community, (4) improving the understanding among children and youth of their own rights and of local resources available for assistance, and (5) provide children and youth attending the CFS with guidance on resolving conflicts or other problems.
• Ensure the daily implementation of UMCOR’s supervisory protocol at each CFS.
• Bring any issues regarding CFS operation and the quality of project implementation to the immediate attention of the CFS Supervisor and / or CFS Assistant.
• Assist the CFS Supervisor and / or CFS Assistant in completing other administrative or logistical tasks as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS and Professional Experience:
• At least 2 years field experience working for NGO’s, schools, or the government. Experience working on projects targeting vulnerable women and children is highly preferred.
• A secondary school degree
• Experience in the operation of child friendly spaces or on the implementation of child protection projects is highly preferred
KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge in setting up and supporting child friendly spaces, implementing children’s and women’s welfare improvement projects, and supervising adult education initiatives.
• Understanding of children, youth, women and gender development issues in relief situations.
• Familiarity with the Red Cross and NGO Code of Conduct, Sphere Standards, Charter of the Rights of the Child, and adherence to Humanitarian Principles.
• Basic computer skills.
• Good oral communication skills in English.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.

• Excellent analytical/problem-solving skills and detail orientation
• Cross-cultural sensitivity, flexible worldview, emotional maturity and physical stamina.
