PharmAccess Foundation
PharmAccess is a young, fast-growing, international, not-for-profit organization of Dutch origin, which aims to improve access to affordable quality basic health care in Africa. PharmAccess strives to fulfill this mission through public-private partnerships with local organizations and through an output based approach.
PharmAccess supports programs and offers services in several areas, such as providing health insurance for low-income groups, quality improvement of clinics and hospitals, financing of small and medium sized enterprises and support of corporate and national healthcare programs.
PharmAccess was founded in 2001, and is currently active in more than 10 African countries. Its main office resides in Amsterdam. Other offices are established in Nigeria, Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania. The activities of PharmAccess are made possible by funding of donors and clients, such as the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The World Bank, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), large multinationals and the Rockefeller Foundation.
PharmAccess co-initiated in the launching of the Health Insurance Fund, the Investment Fund for Health in Africa and the Medical Credit Fund. The latter was selected as a winner of the G-20 Finance Challenge at the G-20 summit in Seoul, Korea in November 2010.
Job Descpription
As Chief Medical Officer, you play a central role in developing and monitoring the medical vision of PharmAccess Foundation. You hold a central position within our organization and are able to oversee our programs and processes from a meta-level point of view. You advise the senior management and program managers in designing and implementing the different programs. You are aware of the latest developments in the medical field and know how to translate this towards health care situation in Africa. You also play an important role in the selection and evaluation of insurance packages.
With your knowledge and experience you are be able to provide concrete advice on medicines distribution and prescription and medical services, tailored to the local African situation. As Medical Officer you will, as the contact person for our organization, maintain in close contact with the Department of Global Health at the AMC, which along with PharmAccess is part of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development. You know how to convince the different parties regarding necessary program changes.
You have an extensive network and know how to connect with the right persons and parties, to buy expertise and medicine for our programs in a cost efficiently manner.
In the field you actively supervise the quality standards of care by enabling the appropriate medical experts for the monitoring and evaluation of local clinics partaking in our programs. Where necessary, you develop and organize trainings to increase the capacity level in the clinics and among health workers in Africa.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Completed medicine study;
• Minimum 10 years medical experience, for example as a general practitioner and willingness to further training;
• Preferably professional experience in Africa;
• Wide knowledge of health care, in terms of health care insurance, health care and public health;
• Sparring partner for senior management;
• Excellent command of Dutch and English verbal and written. Command of the French language is advantageous;
• Analytical and teaching skills;
• Excellent project management skills and a hands-on mentality;
• Able to operate strategically in a complex setting with various stakeholders;
• Used to be acting alone and able to maintain an overall view when liaising between the different programs;
• Networker and relationship manager;
• Energetic and enthusiastic;
• Flexible and able to think out of the box;
• Interest in scientific research;
• Affinity with our objectives;
• Willingness to travel regularly.
PharmAccess Offers
PharmAccess offers an excellent job opportunity in a dynamic international environment with solid working conditions and a branch conform salary. PharmAccess has a fulltime workweek of 40 hours, a collective pension scheme and a collective health insurance. We offer 25 free days a year based on a fulltime employment agreement.
