Project / Field of activity
Come and join the programme Support to the Peace and Security Directorate of the African Union.
For decades, the African continent has been marked by crises and conflicts, which constitute a major factor in the slow economic, political and social development of Africa. However, with the transition of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) into the African Union (AU), the continent gained a politically significant organisation prepared to take on the numerous issues to be dealt with in the field of peace and security. The Union, which was set up in 2002, has taken on a significantly more comprehensive mandate in the area of peace and security, its main task being to establish the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA).
The programme's objective is to build the capacities of the actors involved in establishing and using APSA, above all the Commission of the African Union (AUC), but also regional organisations, pan-African institutions and donors, in order to enable them to fulfil their tasks better and more promptly.
Responsibilities
You will support the African Peace and Security Programme of the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) at the University of Addis Ababa (AAU) and will be responsible for managing two key components. The first of these is the Outreach Programme, which networks with APSA's institutions. Through dialogue, information and events you will support networking activities, above all by the AUC and the regional organisations. You will also be in charge of sectoral development and ongoing expansion of the research programme 'African Solutions in Peace and Security' and will conduct corresponding measures in cooperation with research institutions in Africa's five sub-regions. Furthermore, you will help develop concepts for the overall programme, and in this way contribute to establishing and expanding the Africa Peace and Security Programme as the AU's research and advisory institution.
Qualifications
An expert in the area of peace and security, you have a relevant university degree. With over ten years' experience in Africa you are equipped to provide policy advice to our partners and have an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of African politics and governance. You have a proven track record in strategic institutional development at the international level, and in cooperation with African regional organisations. Your strengths include excellent advisory and communications skills and finely tuned intercultural skills, enabling you to exercise a moderating influence and bring about compromise. You have a flair for dealing with high-ranking political decision-makers, and enjoy establishing networks and forming alliances. A good knowledge of English and French in a business setting complete your profile.
