UN WOMEN: WEBSITE ANALYST

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
The Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnership Bureau provides the inter-governmental bodies with the timely, high quality and relevant substantive support and inputs they need for successful deliberations related to gender equality and the empowerment of women. This includes supporting the work of the main bodies of the UN (GA/ECOSOC/Security Council, Functional Committees etc), organizing and supporting the meetings of CSW and organizing and supporting the meetings of the UN Women Executive Board.
The Bureau also leads the efforts to develop and oversee the implementation of the strategy for UN Women's role to "lead, coordinate and promote the accountability of the United Nations system in its work on gender equality and the empowerment of women" at Global, regional and Country level.
The Bureau leads the work to develop, and implement UNW's strategy for interaction with External Partners, including for advocacy, communications and for mobilization of support both in terms of political will, and financial resources, using effective partnerships with multi-lateral organizations and the staff work together in close collaboration with the staff in the rest of UNW. Civil society, as well as with the media and private sector.
Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Civil Society and Outreach Unit, the incumbent of the post will maintain the Division's outreach to civil society and the international community through the Internet, acting as the Division's World Wide Web services administrator, maintaining user networks and joint projects with other United Nations entities and integrating this with other forms of outreach.

1. Website Development and Maintenance
  • Maintain the Division's world wide web site, and assist in defining the content, structure, type and source of information to be provided;
  • Convert documents to html (web) language and keep the information up-to-date;
  • Undertake day to day operations, verify hypertext links, and coordinate the transfer of materials to the Internet server. Create directory structures for the information and establish hypertext links between documents, keeping the structure flexible to accommodate changes and future growth, balancing information quality with information quality and contributing to a coherent outreach strategy for the Division;
  • Collaborate with other web initiatives to develop a linking strategy and co-ordinate efforts to expand and publicize the web site as part of the follow-up to the Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW); and the special session of the General Assembly.

2. Development and maintenance of website procedures

  • In close collaboration with the Communications and Advocacy section, create and maintain procedures for interactive use of the Internet ,as well as innovative, collaborative and cost efficient mechanisms to make global women's issues available on the information highway including development of navigational tools to maximize access to these resources within and outside the United Nations system;
  • Liaise with the information System Units of other United Nations agencies on use of electronic means of communication to exchange information, and set up communication links and procedures for data sharing;
  • Assist with the conversion of historic documents such as the national reports to the Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW), Special Session of the general Assembly and the CEDAW reports to Internet-compatible electronic format.

3. Staff Training

  • Train and assist the Division's staff with the use of the Division's world wide web page and electronic networks as well as the use of computerised information technologies in order to take full advantage of its capabilities in optimizing resources, and to contribute to its development;
  • Assist in the identification of external collaboration and resources for the development of new web features.
Impact of Results

The key results have a major impact on the overall effectiveness of UN Women's strategic outreach, advocacy and communications, leading to enhanced impact on gender issues, as well as the enhanced visibility and reputation of the organization.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in one or more of the following disciplines: Information technology, Communications, and other related fields.
Experience
  • At least two years of progressively responsible experience in a large international and/or corporate organization. Experience in IT/ website development/ communications required.
Language Requirements
  • Written and oral proficiency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of the other UN working knowledge is desirable.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
