Human Rights Watch ("HRW") is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Senior Advocate/Researcher for International Financial Institutions.
Description: The Senior Advocate/Researcher for International Financial Institutions ("IFIs") is the principal advocate and researcher for Human Rights Watch on the IFIs, primarily those based in Washington, DC. S/he is responsible for working with staff in HRW's regional and thematic divisions to develop and implement advocacy strategies on the countries and issues addressed by HRW, advocating for HRW's perspectives on key policies within IFIs, and assessing the human rights performance of these institutions. S/he will also have the ability to undertake independent research on policies or activities related to IFIs.
HRW's IFI work primarily focuses on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund ("IMF"), as well as regional multilateral development banks, such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Asian Development Bank. The position will involve regular meetings with IFI officials and members of their ruling boards. In addition, the successful candidate will engage with the media, civil society, and other key constituents.
The position is based in Washington, DC, although periodic travel is required. The Senior Advocate/Researcher for IFIs will report to the Business and Human Rights Director.
Qualifications: Applicants should possess at least 5 to 10 years of international advocacy experience. Substantial knowledge of human rights and how they pertain to the operations and mandate of International Financial Institutions and an understanding of these institutions is required. Direct experience working with or at these institutions is strongly desired. Candidates must have significant human rights experience and expertise and demonstrated commitment to human rights. In addition, the successful applicant must be an effective public speaker and possess excellent writing and editing skills in English. Fluency in one or more other language(s) is advantageous. The ideal candidate will be collegial and have good judgment and excellent analytical and strategic-thinking capabilities; the ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure; the capacity to pay close attention to detail while working in a fast-paced environment and juggling multiple tasks; strong organization and coordination skills; and the ability to work effectively and independently, as well as part of a team, and in partnership with other organizations.
