The University of Hargeisa is the largest national higher education institution in Somaliland and is looking to develop its teaching capacity. English language studies form a large part of the undergraduate curriculum and it is the university’s continuing goal to equip all eventual graduates with a high level of English. The University is currently looking to recruit English language teachers for the start of the next semester (late September 2011).
The University of Hargeisa has an established English language program which brings international English-speaking teachers to Somaliland to contribute to the development of English studies. Successful applicants will work in a language department staffed by international and local English teachers to teach an established curriculum and assess students' progress. This program was established in 2009 and has expanded greatly since then. The English department currently provides language tuition for all freshmen and sophomore students – with a total number of around 1800 students.
In return for providing accommodation and living expenses international teachers will be expected to teach a set English curriculum to classes of undergraduate students. Aside from having the chance to participate in university life and build teaching and communication skills, volunteers on the program will have a unique opportunity to experience life in Somaliland and develop an understanding of this fascinating part of the Horn of Africa.
The English Department is looking for candidates who speak English as a native language (or fluent second language) and possess the confidence and communication skills necessary for delivering effective language training. Prior ESL experience/qualifications are highly desirable but not strictly essential.
