The Election Support Project (ESP) supported various activities to encourage active participation of women in the last year’s general elections. The activities encouraged women to participate in elections in different capacities including as candidates, voters and elections administrators. As part of the ESP, UN Women carried out activities to support women living in remote areas to access information. The support included provision of 1,500 radios to communities in Arusha, Pemba, Sengerema and Mwanza.
The project has now been extended beyond the election focus to also encompass issues related to governance including debates on constitution, corruption, good governance, gender based violence, HIV/AIDS, government plans to reduce poverty and other development issues. A further 1,500 radios will be distributed to women’s groups in new areas, along with training for the radio practitioners on data gathering and disseminating information related to women and other issues in their communities. In this context, UN Women is seeking to recruit a Consultant to coordinate implementation of these activities.
