Human Rights Watch ("HRW") seeks a senior, experienced professional to direct its advocacy and media efforts in the Middle East and North Africa ("MENA") region and serve as a senior member of the MENA staff.
Description: The Advocacy and Communications Director is the chief advocate and communications director for HRW's work in the MENA region, responsible for ensuring the highest standards of quality and effectiveness for HRW's diverse advocacy and media efforts in the region. S/he will be based in the Middle East or North Africa, and will serve as the organization's key regional spokesperson, representing HRW before the media, government officials, partners and the public, and coordinating and providing direction for the advocacy and media efforts of the MENA staff based in the US, Europe, and the MENA region. S/he will lead efforts to develop and implement strategies for transforming the organization's investigations and reports into concrete improvements in human rights practices in the region by influencing and enlisting the support of governments and government officials, international and regional institutions, other NGOs, the private sector, and the general public. S/he will also be responsible for coordinating press conferences and media outreach in connection with the work of the MENA division. The MENA Advocacy and Communications Director will be a senior member of HRW's MENA staff, and HRW's senior representative based in the region. In light of the time zone differences with the New York headquarters and the urgent nature of the work, the person must be available to work flexible hours, sometimes involving nights and weekends. Frequent and extensive travel in the region and to Europe and North America, often times on very short notice, is a required component of this job.
Qualifications:
- A demonstrated commitment to human rights and international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW.
- A minimum of fifteen years of professional experience in advocacy, media work, and policy development in MENA or in connection with MENA issues with a proven record of success using these tools to move policy.
- Extensive experience and familiarity working with the Middle East press and media.
- A strong network of relationships with senior officials and journalists in the MENA region.
- Fluency and excellent writing and editing skills in both English and Arabic.
- Excellent presentation skills and dynamic public- speaking ability.
- A track record as an entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function in an environment requiring frequent collaboration.
- Possess strong personal drive, the capacity to pay close attention to detail, high energy, an ability to flourish in a fast-paced environment juggling multiple and often competing demands, and a determination to get the job done even if extraordinary time and effort is required.
- The ability to work quickly and well under pressure with a diverse and dynamic team.
- Very strong organizational skills and experience.
- The ability to think conceptually, creatively, and strategically.
